Participating in the Defend our Juries Lift the Ban campaign involves a lot of hours waiting: waiting to be arrested; waiting for your turn to be processed in the police station; locked in a police cell; waiting for a train/bus because you've been released at some ungodly hour of the night. So some good reading matter is a life-saver!
For the most recent actions I've been reading of Ralph Miliband's classic text "The State in Capitalist Society" (Quartet Books, London 1973, first published 1969). Some bits of the book have clearly dated, but the main narrative is as relevant as ever and I want to share with you this lovely concise quote (page 233):
[T]he greatest of all dangers to the capitalist system is that more and more people, particularly in the subordinate classes, should come to think as both possible and desirable an entirely different social order, based upon the social ownership of at least a predominant part of the means of economic activity, and dedicated to he elimination of privilege and unequal power; and that 'the masses' should also seek to give expression to this belief in terms of political action.
